Award-winning author!

Terrified, I do it anyway...

Joanie Smiths mom is a heroin junkie who prefers a pet hamster to her own daughter. Joan of Arcs dad once got drunk and demanded his sons kill their sister: Drown that witch! But other than dysfunctional families, what else do these teenagers have in common? Because Joanies grandma has been insisting theyre so much alike for years.

Join Joanie as she faces challenges large and small: from caring for a sick grandmother, to dealing with an abusive mom, to battling bullies at schoolall while dealing with the flutters of first love and finding her unique voice in the most crucial human rights movement of our time. Get to know a different side of the infamous Joan of Arc while youre at it—the ordinary peasant whose dad tried to force her into an arranged marriage; the simple farm girl who faced exclusion from peers and cried to go home to her family after proving herself as a soldier.

Figure out for yourself what these young women have in common and ponder how you too—an ordinary person—can be used by God (if youre willing) to do the extraordinary.

“This gritty, challenging tale of poverty, integrity, and one girl’s against-the-odds battle is a worthy follow-up to Robsdottir's first novel Brave Water.” Corinna Turner, Carnegie nominated author of the novel series I Am Margaret

Second effort and keep them coming

I’m halfway through this book and I enjoy it better than Sarah R’s first work which was very good Brave Water. I hope she continues to write books that connect to teenagers in a spiritual and meaningful way.

A must read from my new favorite author

This book is a brave exploration of current social issues, juxtaposed to a historical fiction story. Absolutely fantastic!

Joan of Arkansas was even better than Brave Water!

Realistic fiction with relatable characters-I loved it! Entertaining and delivers a message without being hokey. Just purchased a second copy to give as a gift.

Excellent YA novel.

I really enjoyed this ya novel written by a good friend of mine. She writes with compassion and wisdom about a teen girl from a dysfunctional family who is also very poor. Her name is joan and her grandmother tells her she is like Joan of Arc. I found the plot very engaging, the characters very real, and really got interested in what would happen next. Great book for adults and teens. And very pro life in a non preachy way.
